Cardura has Doxazosin as its active ingredient, and it belongs to the class of drugs known as alpha-adrenergic blockers. It can also be used for improving urination in men suffering from enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia. For this, it works by relaxing muscles in the bladder neck and prostate, so that urinating is made easier.
For treating hypertension, the treatment begins with Cardura 1mg per day. Depending on your response to the treatment, the dosage can be increased to as much as Cardura 16mg per day.
For the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, you may be advised to take Cardura 1 to 8mg per day, depending on your BPH symptomatology and urodynamics.
Side Effects & Interactions of Cardura
Mild dizziness, drowsiness, tiredness, headache, runny nose or nausea can be commonly experienced by patients using Cardura. These are mild side effects of the drug and should go away on their own as your body adjusts to the medicine. However, seek medical attention right away if any of these worsen or persist. Some serious side effects associated with the drug include:
- Pounding or fast heartbeat
- Fluttering in chest
- Difficulty breathing
- Swelling on feet, ankles or hands
- Painful erection that lasts for more than 4 hours
Some hypersensitive patients may develop an allergic reaction to the medicine. Symptoms of an allergy include hives on any part of the body or on the entire body, severe dizziness, and difficulty breathing or itching or swelling on throat, lips, tongue or face. Stop using the medicine at once if you develop any of these symptoms and notify your doctor. Seek medical attention if any of these persist even after discontinuing the drug.
Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Cardura if you are already using medicines such as drugs for treating sexual function problems (e.g. sildenafil, vardenafil or tadalafil). If taking any of these is essential, you should keep a gap of at least 4 hours between these and Cardura.
Diet aids and cough and cold products may contain ingredients that may increase your blood pressure or heart rate. Inform your doctor beforehand if you are using any of these drugs at present.
Warnings & Precautions of Cardura
Do not use Cardura if you have an allergy to any of its ingredients, or to any alpha blockers (e.g. terazosin or prazosin). Examples of heart diseases that need to be notified to your doctor include angina, congestive heart failure and a recent heart attack.
Elderly patients have more risks of developing low blood pressure or dizziness after taking Cardura. Therefore, such patients should use this drug with caution.
